A Special Little Girl in My Life - Nurul

Today was suppose to meet up the Bearz for a karaoke session but I was unable to make it due to Rotaract commitments.

For the past 6 weeks, I have been giving tutions to a special little girl, Nurul. Despite suffering from cerebral palsy, she is definitely a cheerful and energetic girl. A 'joint project' between RAC Singapore West and Spastics Children Homes during the Nov-Dec Holidays where volunteers commit themselves in giving these special children tuitions in their studies. This was also a great way for these children to interact with 'strangers' so as to build their self-esteem and confidence in interacting people of different walks of life.

For those who are not aware of this illness, below is an extract taken from their website: www.spastic.org.sg. Feel free to look at their website for more info too. :)

"Cerebral Palsy is an inclusive term used to describe a group of non-progressive disorders occurring in young children in which damage to the brain causes impairment of motor function. The degree of the disabilities ranges from extreme tightness or looseness of the muscles of the body, improper head, shoulder or hip control to slight speech impairment. It is not curable. This can happen before or during birth or some illness or injury of the child early in life."

Today was the last session for me to give tuition to Nurul before school starts. As usual, the session started with Nurul doing the home assignments provided by the home. As usual, being her active self, she will ask for the library books that i borrowed from the library and 'story-telling' will be begin from there. I was pretty nervous when it was my first session but managed to find some great storybooks which Nurul enjoy. Eversince that, I made a point to borrow story books so as to make the session interactive and serves as her 'reward' after doing her home assignments. Soon it was time to bid farewell to this special friend of mine

I will definitely miss her smiles, giggles and ocassionally tantrums that she will throw at me. Every session was memorable in their own way and I will definitely miss this special girl. Definitely a gd way to spent my holidays in a meaningful way this. I just hope that i had make a difference in her life.

Take care my dear little girl. :)
